Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has just one more card to play ahead of the National League kick-off.

He insists that his pre-season recruitment has ended with the capture of Bromley striker Alex Wall and Bradley Hudson-Odoi.

Wall, a former Luton Town striker, has joined on a deal that will be completed if he makes it through pre-season without the recurrence of a knee injury, while Hudson-Odoi put pen to paper last month.

Meanwhile, Reading have been running the rule over Dan Wishart with Doswell’s blessing.

It leaves one piece of the puzzle left to fill, and Doswell is hoping the complete picture will be clear soon.

He said: “Everyone of last season’s squad has signed an improved deal and extension to their contract taking it to two years.

“Only Dan Fitchett is yet to sign the extension [he still has one year left to run], because I need to check his physicality in the next league up.

“I am sure he will be fine, but he needs to improve a little on his strength – you’re up against big units in this league, and sometimes he has gone missing in that respect.

“He scored 21 goals last season, which is brilliant, but he knows he could have had 31.

“If Craig McAllister is back fit, and having signed Alex Wall, we have some very strong competition up there.”

He added: “I was interested in Alex when he moved from Maidenhead to Luton, but Luton were offering £35k and that was out of our reach.

“He has a sore knee, and we have been burnt with sore knees before with Rhys Weston and Will Spetch.

“He needs to get through a tough pre-season, but he is keen to sign and we’re keen to have him. But if Alex does not sign, we would leave it at that.”

Should the deal be completed, Wall would be only Doswell’s second acquisition of the summer.

Doswell said: “What people forget is that we brought Ryan Burge and Nicky Bailey in March, they are almost like two new signings.

“Ryan was injured after four games, but showed enough to prove he is going to be a class act.”

He added: “I rate Louis John very highly, and he will be pushing Simon Downer and Dean Beckwith for a starting place.

“Ross Stearn and Tom Bolarinaw have competition from Hudson-Odoi, and tell me which one out of Craig Eastmond, Ryan Burge, Nicky Bailey and Bedsente Gomis would not expect play?

“Every third phone call I get is from an agent telling me they have the next Jamie Vardy, but now we’re very fixed on our squad and working with them.”
