AFC Wimbledon Ladies are Surrey County Cup champions after overcoming Carshalton Athletic Ladies 3-1 in last night’s final.

This time last year, the team were licking their wounds after a dismal season ended without winning a single game.

However, after bringing in fresh blood – replacing the team’s manager and nearly all the players – the ladies have now brought home the club’s first piece of silverware in almost 10 years.

They had to come from behind to see off the Robins’ challenge going 1-0 down just after the break.

The equaliser came on the hour through Caroline Bisson – who has 30 goals to her name this season.

With the match all square at the end of normal time, it took two Dons goals – from Linsey Clarke and Sian Wylie – in extra time to seal the silverware.

Manager Chris Lyons said: “Carshalton had the best start really. I knew we had to speak to the girls at half time, I knew we had to get them switched on, get them focused and believing in themselves.

“They responded fantastically. It was definitely a game of two halves.

“From the moment it went into extra time there was only ever going to be one team winning it and that was us.”

He added: “The win is massive because it's the first trophy for a very long time.

“They're a good group of players and they believe in themselves, and this just reinforces that point really of just how good they are.”

Dons reached the first round of the FA Cup last season, but Lyons’ ultimate goal is to guide them out of the London and South East Regional Women’s League and into the Premier League.

He said: “Although we are very happy with what we achieved yesterday, we're not going to take our foot of the gas.”
