Residents fear an increase in planning applications for high-rise buildings would “turn Putney into Croydon” and ruin the look of the area.

They said the planning applications – if approved – would negatively affect Putney high street and its transport infrastructure.

In the past year, applications have been submitted for sites in Upper Richmond Road including multi-storey developments at the old Capsticks building by East Putney station, Tileman House and Putney Place.

Patricia Poulter, 55, of Earnshaw Place, lives metres from the proposed Capsticks site, which is said to consist of one nine-storey and one 13-storey block.

She said: “The plans have changed from replacing office blocks with more office space and a small amount of residential into mostly residential space with a few offices.

“The problem is it is turning Putney into Croydon, changing the nature of the area and moving quite a lot of people in when the infrastructure cannot cope.

“It would be a disaster for Putney.”

Wandsworth Council’s planning website has been inundated with objections from residents concerned about the affect such buildings would have on their privacy, parking and the effects that construction would have upon Upper Richmond Road.

Putney MP Justine Greening has also expressed concern over the proposed high rise constructions along with Putney Lib Dems and they have started a No to High Rises petition.

A Wandsworth Council spokesman said: “A lot of applications are made for public consultation and we would encourage the public to register their views.

“These views will be taken into account when councillors meet to determine these applications.”
