Tributes have been flooding in for the former mayor of Lambeth who was found dead in his home on New Year’s Eve.

Worried relatives of Jonathan Driver, who was the current mayor of Croydon and a teacher at Emanuel School in Wandsworth, called police who broke down the door of his home in Waddon.

It is understood Coun Driver had been suffering from the flu and was also diabetic which could have lead to serious complications.

Coun Driver served as an elected member for Knights Hill Ward from 1994 to 1998.

His former colleague Councillor John Whelan, Conservative group leader of Lambeth Council, paid tribute to him.

He said: “Former Councillor Driver was very popular with elected members from all parties. He made a big impact on the local community in Lambeth in his mayoral year.

“We remember Jonathan for his bluff Yorkshire sense of humour, the twinkle in his eye, his love of cricket, and the general knowledge quizzes at which he excelled. He was tireless in his support for the mayoral charities in Lambeth after his term of office and supported many fund raising events.”

Lambeth Council leader, Councillor Steve Reed, added: “We are all deeply saddened by the death of former mayor and Councillor Jonathan Driver.

“He will be remembered for his commitment to serving the people of Lambeth and as a hard-working and dedicated mayor. The council extends condolences to his family and friends."
