A person has been arrested and taken to hospital after a vehicle crashed into a railway bridge in South Norwood.

Today (Friday, March 15) at around 4am, police were chasing two vehicles in the Wallington area after they allegedly failed to stop.

Around ten minutes later, one of the vehicles crashed into a lamppost on the railway bridge on Whitehorse Road, South Norwood.

The occupant of the vehicle was taken to hospital where his injuries were assessed as not life-threatening or life-changing.

He has also been arrested.

The other vehicle is still being searched for by police.

Whitehorse Road is currently closed between Bensham Manor Road and Zion Place as structural engineers assess damage to the railway bridge wall.

The local authority plans to put temporary safety measures in place.
