A teenage boy has admitted killing Elianne Andam but denied murdering her.

Elianne, 15, was stabbed to death on Wellesley Road last September as she was on her way to the Old Palace of John Whitgift School.

The 17-year-old defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at the Old Bailey via video link on Thursday (March 14).

He was asked how he pleads to the charge of murdering Elianne Andam.

He replied: "Not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter."

Prosecutors indicated that the manslaughter charge would not be accepted.

He was also asked how he pleads to a charge of possessing a blade in a public place and pleaded not guilty.

The trial had been listed to take place on April 29 this year.

However, Judge John Cavanagh KC has said that the trial will have to be delayed until November.

Judge Cavanagh KC said the delay to the trial was extremely unfortunate, but necessary.

He said: "The delay prolongs the suffering of Elianne Andam's family, who have the trial looming over their heads."

Judge Cavanagh added: "The defendant himself is a young person and the court recognises the need to bring young defendants to trial as soon as possible."

He set the new trial date as November 25 this year.
