A technical glitch in Sutton Council IT servers meant that people had to queue for “hours” to vote in the EU referendum, according to a voter.
The authority has admitted its servers failed on Thursday afternoon while people flocked to polling stations, but a spokesman said it “had no impact on the conduct of the referendum”.
A voter, who wished to remain anonymous, said the council should have had “things in place”.
She said: “On the most important day politically for a long time, that should not have happened.
“If they can’t get it right on a day like that, something is going badly wrong.
“The chief executive of the council needs to be asked why that happened and why people were waiting.”
But a council spokesman said: “There was an issue with our IT servers [on Thursday] afternoon.
“This was resolved quickly and effectively and had no impact on the conduct of the referendum.”
