A woman has died after being hit by a bus in London Road, Mitcham this morning.

Police in London Road confirmed that a woman had died after she was hit by the 355 bus at 7am.

A witness said they thought a middle-aged woman had been hit by a bus outside Mitcham Library.

Police were unable to confirm whether a criminal investigation would take place, but said an investigation was being carried out by specialists from the Roads and Transport Policing Command.

Officers were seen driving the bus at speed before performing an emergency stop in order to test the brakes.

Road closures and bus diversions were in place following the accident, but all roads re-opened in the area shortly before midday.

John Richardson, a cyclist who travels to work in London by bike everyday saw what happened after the crash.

He told the Wimbledon Guardian: "When I got to the scene of the collision there was some ambulances and police cars and a bus at an angle half in the bus lane, half out.

"I would normally have cycled past but I know several people that use that route on their journey so stopped to see if it was one of them."

He said he also thought the person involved in the crash was a woman.

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 7.07am to London Road, Mitcham, to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent a paramedic in a car, an ambulance crew and an incident response officer to the scene.

"Sadly a person died at the scene."
