Expert advice to help Wandsworth council assess the new proposed Crossrail 2 route will cost £10,000, according to a report.

Wandsworth Council officers have been working with Transport for London on the development of proposals for Crossrail 2, and the council itself was supportive of the proposal to bring the new line through Tooting Broadway.

With changes to the preferred route now under consultation by TfL, and Balham pitched instead of Tooting Broadway, Wandsworth Council is "seeking further clarification" on the safeguarded route.

The report, which was recommended to the executive by members of the community services overview and scrutiny committee on Tuesday, said: "It is important that TfL undertake a full and open evaluation of the route options, particularly the difference in costs and benefits between a station at Balham and Tooting Broadway.

"This should include a full evaluation of the socio-economic, operational, financial and environmental issues.

"When additional information is provided by TfL it may be appropriate for the council to seek some expert advice on geotechnical constraints on tunnelling and station construction as this specialised expertise is not currently available within the council.

"Its estimated cost will be £10,000."

The report confirms that this cost can be met from existing budgets.

In previous consultations, the council supported the Tooting Broadway option, and believed it could bring economic regeneration, in part because of the provision of a direct line to Clapham Junction.

According to the report, the council currently considers that the benefits to Balham are not considered to be "as great" as those to Tooting Broadway.

It also notes considerable opposition to the original plan for a shaft on Wandsworth Common, which TfL moved under the Tooting Broadway route, but reappears near Bolingbrooke Grove under the Balham route.

Wandsworth Common Management Advisory Committee is expected to provide feedback on the shaft location.

The report said: "While it is accepted that the suggested location is preferable to the demolition of residential properties, further detail is required to ensure that the impact of such a site can be minimised as this is located on a well-used part of the Common.

"This site would not be required if Tooting Broadway was chosen as the preferred interchange with the Northern Line."

The report was recommended on Tuesday night and will be discussed by the executive on November 30.
